Kip Simons Inducted into Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Air Force men's gymnastics head coach Kip Simons was one of 12 Ohio State alumni inducted into the 2006 OSU Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 15, in Columbus, Ohio, by the Varsity "O" Association.

 

Simons earned numerous honors throughout his four years at Ohio State, including the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the Nissen-Emery Award, which is given to the nation's top senior gymnast. A four-time All-Big Ten honoree and conference champion, Simons was also a two-time All-American.

 

Following his collegiate career, Simons competed on two world championship teams, as well as the gold-medal winning team at the Pan-American Games.  He also represented the U.S. at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

 

In addition to Simons, the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2006 includes former 1995 Heisman Trophy winner and Walter Camp Player of the Year, Eddie George. Five other men - Kevin Atkins (track and field), Adam DiSabato (wrestling), Alex Eckelman (baseball), Ron Nischwitz (baseball) and Ted Provost (football) - and five women - Kate Hedman (swimming), Annette Kraml (rifle), Donica Merriman (track and field), Patricia Szelle (fencing) and Lindsey Vagades (gymnastics) - were also be inducted. 

 

The induction ceremony and banquet was one of two ceremonies to celebrate the latest class of OSU Hall of Famers.  The group was also honored on Saturday, Sept. 16, during halftime of Ohio State's football game with Cincinnati.
