Air Force Ties for 12th Place at Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate
Oct. 28, 2008 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Turning in its best round on the final day of competition, the Air Force golf team finished tied for 12th place at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico State at the par-71 NMSU Golf Course. The Falcons fired a 1-under-par 283 in the final round on Tuesday, bringing their total for the tournament to 879 (+27). Leading Air Force for the sixth time in as many tournaments this season was junior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.), who tied for seventh place at 212 (-1). It marked the fourth top-10 performance for Whitney this fall and the fifth tournament of the year in which he has shot under par. Meanwhile, sophomore Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas) turned Air Force's best single-round performance of the tournament, firing a 66 on Tuesday to finish tied for 40th place overall at 221. Seniors Andrew Gibson (San Ramon, Calif.) and Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) were next in the individual standings for the Falcons, at 223 and 225, respectively, while freshman Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas) rounded out the group with a three-round score of 233. The host Aggies, who were seventh after two rounds of competition, took home the team title with a score of 861 (+9). Pacing New Mexico State was medalist Travis Reed, who came in at 5-under-par for the tournament, one stroke ahead of the second-place finishers. The Falcons start out their spring season Feb. 16-17, when they head to San Antonio, Texas, for the UTSA Oak Hills Classic.
