Falcons cruise past Northern Colorado, 16-6
Feb. 2, 2003 Air Force picked up its first win of the season as the Falcons cruised to a 16-6 win over Northern Colorado in a non-conference college baseball game Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Academy's Falcon Field. Northern Colorado won the three-game series by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader. Josh Phifer got the Falcons rolling with his fifth home run of the series, a three-run blast in the first inning into a 25 mile per hour wind. Adam Howes' two-run single keyed a five-run second inning as the Falcons built an 8-0 lead. Northern Colorado, 2-1, got on the board with four runs in the third inning. Trevor Allen, who hit four home runs in Saturday's doubleheader, had a two-run single in the inning. Air Force, 1-2, answered with five in the bottom of the third for a 13-4 lead. With the bases loaded, designated hitter Derck Kasel laced a bases-clearing double that scored Howes, Zach McAnguss and Phifer from first base. In the bottom of the seventh, Bowie Frost's two-RBI single to left field scored McAnguss and Phifer for a 16-6 Falcon lead. The 10-run rule after seven innings ended the game. Falcon freshman Paul Vignola went 4.2 innings and picked up the win in the seven-inning contest. He gave up six runs on eight hits. Senior Scott Mears pitched two and one-third innings and retired all seven batters he faced. Frost went 3-for-4 on the day with four RBI. Phifer was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. McAnguss scored four runs in the game. Bear starter Matt Tucker took the loss. He pitched one inning and gave up eight runs on three hits with seven walks. Brad Baker led the Bears, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Air Force returns to action with a four-game series against Hastings College Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 8-9, at Falcon Field. The teams will play a doubleheader each day.
